Hey everyone, this is Brian from DisableMyCable.com and today I'm going to show you how to get
0:20
free TV. Now first of all what you have to do is go to DisableMyCable.com and enter your
0:27
zip code into the station finder on the front page. That will tell you how many stations
0:31
you can get in your area. Now if you live in a big city, it should be no problem. You
0:36
should be able to get all the networks and PBS plus a few local stations. But if you
0:42
live 30, 40, 50 miles away from the city, you might not be able to get a lot of stations
0:48
So check the station finder on DisableMyCable.com before you proceed with this. Okay, let's
0:55
say you've checked the site and you can get channels. The first thing to do is to disconnect
1:02
your cable TV or satellite or whatever you have right now. So just unscrew that cable
1:09
But hang on to this, we'll need it later. Use it later. Now I have some antennas here
1:18
Check your basements and garages for wrapping your antenna, which is what this is right here
1:25
This is an old-style antenna that was used back when there was og TV and it works
1:30
with digital TV. But I don't recommend going out and buying one of these because there's a lot better
1:36
antennas available Just use it for testing And if you have a modern TV you can just plug it right in and screw it into the back of your TV If you have an old tube type TV you need a converter box and you can go to my site and see where to get some of those
1:53
Now, the antenna that I like, that I use, is called the Mohu Leaf
1:58
It's actually a flat antenna and it resembles a kind of laminated piece of cardboard, as you can see
2:04
Now there are a lot of manufacturers who make these flat antennas and they're all quite
2:08
good, at least the ones I've looked at. Winegard is good, and there's several others
2:14
But I use the Mahou Leaf, it's probably one of the most popular ones, and it works very well
2:22
So once you get one of these, simply plug it in. Now if you don't have an antenna, and you probably don't, stay tuned and I'll show you
2:32
how to improvise one. real quick. But for now we'll just keep going here
2:38
And you can see that later on. Okay, that's all fine and good
2:42
but most of us don't have an antenna on hand. So I'm going to show you a little trick on how to improvise an antenna
2:49
just to see if this whole thing works. So what you want to do
2:53
is get some coax cable and just use the coax cable that used to connect your TV
3:00
to your cable box or your cable box to the wall or whatever coax you can get
3:06
The same cable that connects to your cable box. So plug in one end to your TV
3:18
Make sure it's in all the way. Then take the other end and find the center pin that sticking out of the middle of it You want to touch this against something that metal to act as an antenna So what I using is this extension cord
3:32
Now make sure it's not plugged in, you don't want to have this plugged in
3:36
But you're basically using this extension cord as an antenna. So take the center pin, be sure you're not touching the side screw part because it won't work if you do that
3:48
touch the center pin against the blade of the extension cord and again the
3:54
extension cord should not be plugged in and that will act as your antenna. Now
3:59
you'll probably want to get someone else to hold this for you because the next part of the test will take a few minutes to complete and that's when your TV is
4:06
scanning. So this is your temporary antenna. Okay now that we have our
4:12
antenna the next thing we have to do is scan for channels. So go to your TV, turn
4:18
it on and hit the menu button. Every TV is different. I have a Sony TV and on my TV
4:25
my remote, you hit the menu button. Scroll down to where it says Channel, hit enter and
4:33
in my case there's a selection for cable or antenna. Go ahead and change that to be antenna
4:39
probably says cable. Go down to antenna, hit enter. Then go to auto program and hit enter
4:49
there. Now whoever is holding your antenna, if you're doing the makeshift antenna, this
4:55
is when they'll have to start holding that antenna to the extension cord to make sure
4:59
that working If you have Mohu Leaf you can just tape that to the wall or tape it to a window That usually the best place to have that So let start the auto process It says it takes 30 minutes but in reality this takes about 5 minutes on my TV
5:16
so we'll get it started. Hit OK. And it will go through a process of searching through channels
5:25
And so just let this complete. Like I said, it takes 5 or 10 minutes
5:30
and we'll come back when this is closer to being done. Okay, we're almost done scanning here
5:43
We've been scanning for a couple minutes, not very long, nowhere near 30 minutes
5:48
It's been less than five minutes. And I have the antenna just sitting on a chair
5:53
with no rhyme or reason as far as the placement, and it's found 12 digital channels
5:59
Now, the og channels don't really work, so don't worry about those
6:03
So that's our results. 12 digital channels. And you should be able to start watching TV right away
6:11
So we're going to hit OK. And get out of here. And you can see, it's probably hard to see from the video, but the picture quality is
6:22
actually fantastic. It's better than cable. So there you go. TV in about half an hour or less. I hope this video has been helpful. If you want any more
6:33
