Hey, this is Brian from DisableMyCable.com, and I just wanted to do a quick video about the brand new 5G home internet gateway that Verizon announced yesterday
0:12
Now, all we have to go on is a few blog posts and a rendering. The footprint is still a square, but it looks more like a tower shape, a taller unit
0:24
The big feature that it has is the new Verizon receiver, which switches between all of Verizon's network bands
0:35
including 5G ultra-wideband millimeter wave, C-band, and 4G LTE, all seamlessly. This should result in higher speeds and more reliable connections
0:48
That's really cool. Another huge feature that is missing in the current cubes is any kind of signal strength meter on the outside of the unit
0:59
T-Mobile's gateway has it, but Verizon doesn't. That makes it really hard to find the best place to put the unit in your home
1:07
Verizon has fixed that problem with this new unit. It has a three-bar signal strength indicator right on the front
1:14
Now, I would have preferred more resolution to that signal strength indicator like four or five bars
1:22
but it's better than nothing, and it should really help people find the best place in their homes
1:27
to put the unit, because you can just walk around with it and see where you get the three bars
1:34
Now, Verizon also claims better Wi-Fi coverage on this unit, which means you may not need
1:40
to attach an external router anymore. I was kind of on the end
1:44
edge case, so if I had this new unit, I probably wouldn need an external router So overall it looks like a really cool unit that they coming out with I excited about it but unfortunately it really unclear when or how existing customers
2:02
can upgrade. Verizon's announcement starts out with the quote, just in time to stream your favorite pro football games this season
2:14
That's what they start their announcement with. Well, NFL season starts September 7th, so that implies the unit is going to come out very soon
2:25
But someone on Reddit who claimed to be a Verizon employee said the unit wouldn't be available until October
2:33
So it's really unclear when the unit actually will be available. And I doubt Verizon will simply start mailing these things to existing customers for free
2:44
they'll probably roll them out to new subscribers and probably use it their existing inventory of old cubes too
2:53
Folks on Reddit are kind of speculating that they might have to open a new account with Verizon
2:59
to get the new unit and then cancel the old one and do tricks like that
3:04
But that's all conjecture. We don't know yet. So we'll just have to wait and see
3:09
when these actually are available. The one thing that we can take comfort
3:14
is that Verizon seems to be investing more and more in 5G home internet, which is good
3:22
for all of this, whether you have the new unit or the old one
3:27
I will provide more information as I get it and as I find it
